About United Bangladesh Appeal

What is United Bangladesh Appeal?

The United Bangladesh Appeal (UBA) is a newly formed umbrella organization seeking to leverage the power of the global expatriate networks to help Bangladesh. UBA actually consists of a number of existing expatriate Bangladeshi organizations who came together in the aftermath of Hurricane Sidr in order to unify the expatriate Bangladeshi community towards a common goal. UBA was formed spontaneously on November 20, 2007 by young Bangladeshi professionals from around the globe who realized that while the various different Bangladeshi expatriate organizations may have varied and divergent interests, there are times of national crisis when a coordinated and unified response can have the greatest impact.

Sidr Victims Compensation Fund

Cyclone Sidr, a Category 4 hurricane devastated southwestern Bangladesh on November 15, killingover 3,200 individuals and causing billions of dollars of damage to crops, livestock and property. Over 7 million Bangladeshis are suffering from the immediate aftermath of Sidr.

Modeled after the 911 Fund, the Sidr Victims’ Compensation Fund intends to make a cash payment of approximately $100 per fatality to surviving family members. The fundraising is being conducted by Bangladeshi expatriate groups that have come together for this purpose and already pledged almost $200,000. Partner organizations in Bangladesh are compiling a detailed list of the victims and their respective beneficiaries. Donated funds will be used solely to compensate Sidr victims.

Good point about contact info - we will have individul contact info up this weekend. In the meantime, please noe UBA is a combination of the partner organizations so the responsibility is shared between the parners listed on the home page. No money is transferred to UBA by the partner organizations until the victim identification and compensation distribution process is finalized in Bangladesh.
